Water Conservation

Water Conservation, Saving Water

Water conservation has become an essential practice in the Temecula Valley area even with our many reservoirs, lakes and ponds. In addition to saving money on your utility bill conserving water can also extend the life of your septic system.

Water-efficient landscapes using “appropriate" landscape materials can reduce irrigation water use by more than 50 percent. Water-efficiency stands up better to drought, reduces drought loss or damage, and requires less time to maintain, lowering maintenance costs. Synthetic grass and other irrigated areas can also significantly reduce time and money maintaining landscapes.

When irrigation is used, it must be used in an efficient manner (example: head to head coverage and low angle nozzles). Some experts estimate that more than 50 percent of commercial and residential irrigation water is wasted due to improper system design, installation and/or maintenance. For optimal irrigation system performance, water efficiency should be considered from the inception of the system's design, through the installation process, followed by consistent management and maintenance.

The addition of mulch, rock and a water conserving drip system is the most efficient way to deep water your plants while saving money and water.

Water-Efficient Irrigation and Landscaping tips...

• Plant drought-resistant lawns, shrubs and plants
• Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants
• Don't water the gutter
• Water your lawn only when it needs it
• Deep-soak your lawn
• Water during the early parts of the day; avoid watering when it's windy
• Add organic matter and use efficient watering systems for shrubs, flower beds and lawns
• Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and sidewalks
• Check for leaks in water mains, sprinkler pipes, hoses, faucets and couplings
